Why he died before he got old

Read this book to see that the human spirit, even at its most sublime, can effect monumental damage on itself and its fellow souls if addiction enters the story. I mourn for Kurt. A once beautiful, then pathetic, lost and heroically stupid boy. Hard rock indeed.

The Heaven Band

Ladies and gentlemen ... meet The Whootles! The Whootles? Yes, heaven's hottest new band combines the cosmic rhythm section of The Who with two of the Fab Four. If you're dying to see them before you get up there, just go to the Rex Theatre on the South Side tonight for "Night of the Singing Dead, Part 10." Rock stars were on notice to be careful through yesterday because as the show producers warn, they are willing to poke fun at dead rock stars "from the 1950s through the day before the show."

KDKA's Larry Richert stars as the King, hosting the "The Late Late Late Late Show with Elvis Presley." Backed by members of the Flashcats, his guests include the usual suspects -- Buddy Holly, Mama Cass, Janis Joplin, Karen Carpenter, Sonny Bono, et al -- plus, sadly, the newcomers. Joey and Dee Dee, recent inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Afterlife, bring the Ramones to the party for the first time. Sammy Davis Jr. and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes unite for a duet of "Can't Take My Eye Off of You." "And for the first time," says ringleader Carl Grefenstette, "Waylon Jennings, who was the bass player in Buddy Holly's band, can finally make the plane."

Embodying these heavenly figures will be the likes of Rob Rogers, Carol Lee Espy, Maggie Stewart, Phil Harris, Ed Masley and, returning from San Francisco for the show, Steve Hansen.

As for The Whootles and its latest member, "To properly capture the spirit of John Entwistle," Grefenstette says, "he will be played by a mannequin."

As for Who will be offended by this, Grefenstette says, "People don't mind. They know that we're doing it in a light-hearted way." Um, as opposed to the people who do it seriously.... The Night of the Singing Dead begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10.
